Here are my personal favorite go-to solutions for how to get rid of back pain naturally and ease the overall effects of stress.

1. Microwaveable Bead Wraps

how to get rid of back pain naturally

# 1 – Ultra Premium Herbal Heating Pad – Microwavable – Hot Cold Therapy – Certified Organic Herbs, Organic Flaxseed & Cherry Pit Filler

# 2 – Warming Shoulder Wrap With Soothing Moisture Technology – Natra Cure

# 3 – Body Wrap – Hot & Cold Therapy – Natural Clay Beads

This ingenious invention works much like weighted blankets do for easing anxiety and depression. They are comforting and calming, while the heat relaxes away the pain.

Even as I sit here at my desk typing this right now, I am wearing my heated bead wrap around my neck and draping down by upper back.

It’s a bit of pampering while getting some work done. Who doesn’t love that?

I’ve had my heated bead wrap for at least 10 years now. It still works perfectly as if it were brand new and that’s what I love about these.

Pros:

  • Flexible for use on many different painful areas of the body
  • Heat up in the microwave so there’s no need for electric cords!
  • Many options are stuffed with healing herbs or essential oils for powerful aromatherapy
  • Beads add a slight weight that is very comforting
  • Some are freezable for hot/cold therapy. Cold therapy is best for reducing inflammation, while heat therapy relaxes away tension.

Cons:

  • The heat may not last as long as you’d like or need sometimes.
  • Be careful to read instructions for heating times. They vary and these can/will burn if heated for too long in the microwave

2. Supplement with Magnesium

Many years ago, during one of my quests for natural pain relief, I came across some information on Magnesium deficiency.

One of the hallmark symptoms of low magnesium are painful, sore muscles and a feeling of tension throughout your body. Magnesium is required for many of the most critical biological functions. #chronicpain #fibromyalgia #naturalliving

Many people poorly absorb Magnesium into their cells and I was one of them! If you suffer from chronic pain, depressive episodes, are prone to anxiety and sleeplessness, or have ‘gut troubles,’ you might be in the same boat!

Transdermal magnesium oil is already in a form your body can use. What this means for us is an effective way to deliver this critical mineral, easing pain and other troublesome symptoms quickly.

How To Use Magnesium Oil Spray

  1. Spray 1 or 2 pumps on sore area of the body
  2. Allow the spray to soak into skin for 10-20 minutes
  3. If stinging or itching is a problem, rinse off after oil has had time to absorb

If you do experience burning or itching, this is a normal reaction. Typically, with consistent use, this pesky side effect will diminish.

If the itching or stinging becomes too intense, simply rinse off. Try and wait as long as you can so that the magnesium has a chance to absorb through your skin. (Unless of course you are having an obvious allergic reaction!)

Best time of day to use? The most common use is 1-2 hours before bedtime to increase relaxation and decrease stress. I have, however, used it before attending high-stress gatherings and found it helpful!

Asutra magnesium body butter is an alternative to the oil spray for those who prefer a creamier lotion-type application.

I like it because of the skin-nurturing benefits of shea butter and other vitamins. For sensitive skin sufferers, this might be the better option for you.

What’s also nice about the Asutra magnesium body butter is the addition of MSM for joint pain relief. Magnesium and MSM make for a powerful 1-2 punch.

I also take, as a supplement, 1-3 tablets each evening of this Doctor’s Best Elemental Magnesium. It’s the best I’ve found and it is less likely to cause digestive distress!

I recommend starting with 1 tablet around 1 to 2 hours before bedtime. Work your way up, if needed. For me, 3 is the maximum my body handles well.

The most important thing is finding what works for YOU because each of us will have different needs.

I’d recommend starting with the magnesium cream or spray. It’s more easily absorbed and it doesn’t have to pass through your digestive system. We all know magnesium’s reputation. 😉

3. TENS Unit Therapy

If you’re unfamiliar with TENS (Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation) for pain relief, I’m so glad you’re here!

It used to be that TENS therapy was only available in a doctor’s office or other medical settings. Each visit would typically last 30 minutes to 1 hour and the cost was not cheap.

It put a hurtin’ on my wallet!

Now, you can receive the incredible benefits of pain relief right at home. No expensive doctor visits!

These TENS units are incredibly simple to use, affordable, and can be as effective, if not more so, than pain pills for many people.

How do they work? In short, reusable sticky pads get placed around the area causing you the most discomfort.

Painless pulses stimulate the nerve fibers to block pain signals to/from your brain.

It’s hard to describe the sensation but when used on the proper settings, this therapy feels like a really deep massage. You feel the muscle contract and relax.

One of the most impressive ‘side effects’ of TENS therapy is how it activates our feel-good hormones, also known as endorphins. It’s our body’s way of speeding up the healing process.

This powerful reaction immediately reduces or eliminates pain and offers us the real relief we’ve been longing for, all without the use of any chemicals.

Here are our current top picks available on Amazon:

iReliev TENS Unit Electronic Pulse Massager & (8) Electrodes Pain Relief Bundle

Dual Channel TENS EMS Unit 24 Modes Muscle Stimulator for Pain Relief Therapy

♥ MEDVICE Rechargeable Tens Unit Muscle Stimulator

Where TENS therapy is concerned, it really doesn’t matter what the cause of your pain is. There’s a good chance one of these units with regular usage will help improve your quality of life too.

4. Essential Oils

In his book, “The Healing Power of Essential Oils,” Dr. Eric Zielinski taught us a whole lot about chronic inflammation and how to get rid of back pain naturally with the help of essential oils.

In fact, this book is our go-to resource at the moment for all types of pain, infections, and natural solutions!

My husband and I both are healthy skeptics when it comes to trying new “remedies.”

Much to our delight, there are a few that actually work.

rapid relief essential oil blend: how to get rid of back pain naturally

Rapid Relief is a real worker bee when added with your other efforts to relieve back pain naturally.

The potent blend of Peppermint, Clove Bud, Laurel Leaf, Black Pepper, Cinnamon Cassia, Ginger Root, German Chamomile, Juniper Berry, and Thyme brings all of the very best anti-inflammatory pain relievers into one bottle.

If you are familiar with Icy Hot and products like it, the sensation is very familiar. By increasing the warmth and circulation to the painful area, your perception of the pain is temporarily dulled.

Unlike other products, the benefits of essential oils go far beyond that of just a brief relief. It’s not a miracle cure by any means but it definitely helps!

How to use: Add just a few drops to your favorite carrier oil and apply to the painful area. It’s that simple!

Significant pain relief happens quickly.

5. Shiatsu Massagers

Words cannot express how much of a lifesaver this shiatsu massager has been on some of my most high-stress, painful days. If you’ve already applied essential oils to your sore spots and then use this after, the relief is incredible.

HELPFUL TIP: If you suffer from a pain condition that makes deep tissue massage especially tender – place a thin blanket or towel between you and this massager. This prevents the kneading knobs from being too intense. Some days I can use mine without the barrier and others I cannot.

At least 2x per week, you will find me, reading material in hand, or soaking worship music playing, while a glowing red alien-ish looking device soothes my aches and pains away. I sure have kept our cats entertained! 🤣

Each of these has been amazingly helpful for different reasons. You can’t go wrong!

If you have curly hair like I do, you’ll need to be careful not to move the scalp massager without picking it up off the scalp first. This helps prevent tangling. 🙂 Found out the hard way!

6. Side Sleeper Back Pain Relief

I discovered years ago that placing a wedge or body pillow in between my knees took the pressure off of my hips and back.

A few benefits of using a knee wedge:

  • Relieve sciatica pain
  • Relieve pregnancy related pain and pressure
  • Eases lower back pain and pressure
  • Aids in surgery recovery
  • Helps to keep spine in proper alignment

What’s even better is if you wedge a fluffy pillow behind your back for more support. It feels much like a really nice hug all over your body! 🙂

If you don’t have a wedge available, and it’s not in your budget to buy one – what about an extra pillow lying around? Try placing that between your knees instead.

  1. Love this! Thank you for the great tips. As someone who suffers regularly, I am certainly going to look at these alternatives to ease the pain!
Lots of love to you, Holly <3

    1. Hey there sweet friend! How are you doing? 🤗

I am so sorry to hear that you suffer regularly from pain. It really does affect our quality of life. I hope you find an alternative that helps you and your unique needs. There can be a learning curve to figure out what works. I had other ideas to include here but felt like the tips above worked most consistently.

I wondered if I should keep posting the natural living articles here on Wholeness Haven or not. I’ve been continuing it because I believe it’s a part of living in wholeness. What do you think?

Thank you, as always, for taking time to come by and share! You are valued!

      1. I would definitely continue with the articles because they are most certainly a big part of living in wholeness – finding alternatives that are more whole with regards to nature 😉

I had two car accidents – I was a passenger in both. The first when I was 18, and the second eleven months later. Both times I suffered compression fractures in my spine and neck. I thought it would only bother me a lot later in life… turns out, I’m there now 😛

We are all still doing fine, thanks. Lock down starts at midnight tonight for 21 days. Praying for everyone right now, everywhere.

Much love to you and yours, dear Holly <3

      1. Hi sis! You are certainly welcome. I try to focus on every aspect of being made whole — our spirit, our hearts/minds and our bodies!

Thank you for your prayers dear friend. God & I love you! 🤗

  2. Thanks for sharing some fantastic ‘helpers’ Holly! Like you, I prefer to treat my symptoms naturally as much as possible, so having these options is so important. I use my bead wrap all the time for headaches, neck and shoulder pain. I don’t know what I’d do without it. I’ve also found magnesium extremely helpful. I found a foam that I particularly like, and of course, there’s always the Epsom salt bath if I can stand to sit in the tub…. Thank you for sharing such helpful information. I’ve scheduled this to pin. Stay safe and well sweet friend. Sending hugs!

    1. It made me smile when I read that you too enjoy your bead wrap and that it has provided pain relief for you. Aren’t they amazing?

Did you ever try the magnesium oil spray or have you always stuck with the foam? I’m curious about the foam as it sounds possibly an even better formula to the spray. Foam might be less messy and easier to apply? I agree about the Epsom salt bath too. It’s been a long time since I took a long, relaxing bath but did recall them being very relaxing (most of the time!)

I am so grateful for your comment and for sharing, Terri. Your support and input means more than I can say! 🤗

      1. I haven’t tried the magnesium oil spray. I’ve only used a foam called TheraWorx that’s made with magnesium. I’ve found it particularly helpful when your muscles are at that point where you think you’re going to have a muscle spasm. I do love that bead wrap – mine’s older than dirt, but still works great. 😊 Hugs!

      2. Thank you for letting me know about that foam! I’ll have to look into that.

I laughed when I read your comment about your bead wrap. Mine are the same, older than dirt and still wonderful. I think it’s one of the main reasons I love them so much.

Blessings and hugs to you, sweet Terri. 🤗

  3. These are great tips! I lift heavy items on a daily basis and I am going to try these! Thank you, hugs!

    1. Hey Christina! Always great to hear from you! Thank you for your compliment! (I always wonder if my posts help people. Always the main goal of mine!)

I bet you do have some body aches and pains doing the furniture building and restoration you do. (Everyone reading this — please go check out her website! They do amazing work!)

I hope you find some relief with these. If you have any questions about them, please let me know. I’d be glad to help! Much love to you. ♥

  4. It’s awful you’ve had to deal with such pain and even be accused of being a drug addict. That shows the level of misunderstanding and ignorance and lack of awareness out there for chronic pain and medications. I have chronic back pain and hip pain, the latter of which is the more debilitating. Given it’s the result of tacks screwed into my back and resultant nerve damage, it feels like there’s little I can do. BUT that’s where you have to think outside the box a little just to manage it a little better. And I do think every little helps. Your suggestions are fantastic! Magnesium seems beneficial for a lot of people and you can have oral supplements but the things like oil sprays are so good for adding that element of massage to get it working directly where it’s needed.

Heat pads are so good. I tend to use a hot water bottle for my tummy and hot/cold pads for other things. I could do with a replacement heat pad for my hips and back now I think so thanks for the reminder. TENS machines are quite interesting. It’s something, like most things, you have to try for yourself to see how you find it because everything works differently for everyone. It’s something I’ve been quite curious about lately having seem them on a daily deal thingy on Amazon (and I’m a sucker for discounts). Do you currently use one, Holly? Do you find it gives immediate relief for the time of using it or does the effect last after the unit is switched off?

I also use something in the UK called Voltarol, which is a warming pain gel. Doesn’t work miracles but it’s still pretty good and it makes massaging different areas a lot easier. Also very good for when you’ve got very tense, knotted shoulders/neck area. I imagine the Hemp Freeze stuff here would be brilliant for that too. I love the look of that, makes me think of whipped yoghurt but blue! Or icing sugar, mmm. That should come with a warning for people like me: Do not eat! 😂

Another fantastic post with such useful product suggestions. xxxx

    1. I LOVE your comments, Caz. You don’t realize how much of an encouragement you are!

You are 100% right — there truly is a lack of understanding and flat out chosen ignorance in regards to people suffering with pain. There will always be a mix of folks – those who really are just trying to get high and those who really are in need of help! Punishing the legitimate cases for the ones who are selling the drugs on the street is infuriating!

I am so sorry to hear of your pain, Caz!! Those tacks and nerve damage sound awful. Bless your heart!! I remember reading your review of a Magnesium supplement available in the UK and was glad it helped you! I agree, I think Magnesium is an element we lack far more often than we realize. I’m assuming some of it is our chronic-stress culture. What do you think?

😊 I wholeheartedly agree with you about using heat pads. Something about them just feels like a big warm and comforting hug, right? The hot water bottle on your tummy sounds interesting. It really does work! I’m grateful you found something that works for you.

I do and have used TENS. If you see a really good deal on Amazon, you might want to check them out my friend. It’s important to get one of quality though. The super cheap (quality cheap vs price cheap) ones don’t have the right settings. It’s important to have settings where you can find what feels right for you. Too strong of a setting can cause pain. Too weak and you won’t really get any help from it.

I have found with TENS that when you first start therapy, it’s best to start on the weaker side for shorter increments. The pain relief does last though and is 99% of the time, immediate! (It tends to just get better with time) There have been times where I could really stretch out the usage to 1 week to 1 month, depending on the severity of pain being experienced and what kind of activity I’ve been doing. Stress levels being another HUGE determining factor.

I would be surprised though if you didn’t get some real relief from them. There is a small learning curve and I think reading up on how to use them correctly helps a ton. Once you get the hang of it though – I think few pain relievers are more effective, to be honest.

Oooh, Voltarol sounds nice. Those heating or cooling gels really do work. I’ve been amazed quite a few times with their effectiveness. When you find the ones that also have natural healing properties in them – it’s even better. I am laughing over here at your comment about the Hemp Freeze though — “WARNING: If we catch you licking this off your finger, we will come hunt you down! NOT for human consumption!” 🤣 Too funny Caz. You’re the best!

Sending you all my love dear friend. It’s always a joy to read your thoughts 🤗🤗🤗

  5. These are such great tips! I’ll have to share this with my husband because he’s always having back pain. The odd part is that he’s fine if he’s doing work around the house or outside. It just bothers him most when he’s been sitting for long periods of time working.

I’m going to check into the magnesium more. I’ve been reading a lot about that here lately and I’m 100% positive I’m deficient and it’s causing a lot of my problems. Thank you for the warning on the stinging! Because that would surely cause me to stop using it if I didn’t know what was going on.

The heated wrap sounds lovely! I need one of those, too! Pinning this so I can do some research and shopping later!

    1. You made my day, Michelle! I’m always concerned when I write posts like this one that it comes across as simply trying to sell something and I don’t want that. To hear it actually helped you, is exactly what I needed to hear. Thank you my friend!

I am sorry to hear about your husband’s back pain. Interestingly enough, I am 100% identical to your husband in this! If I have been sitting, working on one of the blogs or web design, I will get to hurting so bad that I can hardly walk! If I’ve been cutting grass with the push mower, working in our plant nursery (etc), it doesn’t bother me!

I think what might be going on for him is nerve compression, which causes the muscles to become irritated and inflamed. What I’ve found is that I need to get up every 10 to 15 minutes and just walk around or stretch somehow. Even if you’re sitting and reach down to the floor to stretch your back and hip flexors, it will help tremendously with the pain! He might want to try that.

Magnesium is definitely worth a try! I was surprised to find out how easily it is to become deficient when I began researching it. Like you, I kept thinking it over, suspecting all along that I was low. Apparently it doesn’t take much of a drop in levels to create symptoms. Even if your levels are ‘normal,’ supplementing won’t hurt you one bit. If anything, it’ll keep you even more stable. The oil really does work since it absorbs so easily into the body. I can honestly say that especially with anxiety and certain types of pain, it worked within an hour.

The stinging and itching is a bizarre symptom! It caused me major concern. Hubby got a great laugh out of me because the first time I thought I was in BIG trouble. 🤣 I was flapping all around, wondering if my body was on fire or something, ha ha. It’s a hard thing to describe, it’s like little pricklies with some itchy. Supposedly if you allow it to be on for 10 minutes, you’re getting enough of a benefit that you can rinse off and the reaction will stop. What causes it is the opening of the nerve endings letting in the Magnesium directly. (which is what makes it so effective)

You are so sweet for Pinning. Thank you my friend! If you have any questions about any of this stuff, let me know. I’d be glad to help! Love you, Michelle! 🤗

(P.S. I’ve laughed quite a bit about your toilet paper DIY post. I even shared it with my husband! Too funny!)

  6. Thank you Holly, such a kind thing to post, helping anyone with pain. I love all these tips and I especially love that these are not harmful ways to relieve pain. My cousin had all kinds of surgeries on his back to help with his back problems and it only made things worse, this is according to his mom my aunt. Sadly, he ended up becoming an addict because of all the medication he was prescribed from all his surgeries. I wish more people out there in the world would have been treated with understanding and kindness when it came to their health issues instead of a quick fix and addictive medications. A lot of people addicted were once moms, dad, brothers, and sisters living normal lives until they were given something for a toothache, broken bone, surgery and then their lives changed. It breaks my heart to see how it destroyed so many people that are now living on the streets. Thank you again Holly for this post, it shows you care and we need more information like this when it comes to pain management. You and your love ones have a beautiful weekend and stay safe out there.

    1. Hi sweet friend! First and foremost, I want you to know that I’ve been thinking of you & your family. How have you all been doing? Secondly, forgive me for my extreme delay in replying to your comment. For a good while, due to changes in patterns and schedules, I’ve been behind on nearly everything, again. *sigh* I hope you know that I value every single one of your comments and thoughts. You always make my day!

Oh no, I am so deeply sorry to hear about what your cousin went through. It’s true – sometimes, medical intervention makes the problem worse, not better. I have seen it in my own family. Unfortunately, it was the case for me as well. For years, I was bed-ridden with multiple medical conditions. I was on more medications than I’d ever want to remember. It was pure hell, those days. Anyone going through chronic pain and other medical maladies have my whole heart & prayers.

Pain medications, while they are extremely helpful and effective, do come with severe risks. I agree with you – it’s terribly sad to see how many lives and homes have been ruined. 😥 Often, it’s due to negligence in the medical community to monitor patients correctly and intervene when needed. Pain should be taken seriously, but so should long-term health concerns.

I am sending all my love right back to you & yours. Thank you again for such amazing comments. Words can’t express how appreciative I am! 💕

  7. Thank you, Holly, for sharing your insight and these valuable tips! I use my beaded bag and Tens machine and feel the benefit of both. I’m bookmarking this post and will revisit for sure. Awesome share! And I love your customized Pinterest Pins. Stay safe. Much gratitude across the miles. 🙂

    1. Natalie, you have been a wonderful encouragement to me today. Thank you! Your words and shares mean more than I can express. As you & I have expressed before – we can’t possibly do this alone!

I am grateful to hear TENS and bead bags help you too. I sincerely believe they are some of the most effective, yet smile (and natural) remedies for pain available!

Thank you for the compliment on my pins as well. Coming from you, that means A LOT. 🤗 Sending you all my love and very best. Thank you for a wonderful comment!

    1. Hi Jenny! Thank you so much for sharing your thoughts! Forgive me for my delay in replying to you. Life happened and I’ve been terribly behind!

Let me tell you, those beaded pads are amazingly helpful! You would not regret it. Plus, they are effective for long hours being sat in front of a computer – one of the downsides of what we do! It’s hard on the body. Yoga is definitely a big help for stretching out muscles groups that have been immobilized for too long. It’s nice to let our minds go blank and simply de-stress too. Heaven knows we all need that!

  8. This article really spoke to me! My hubby has developed really intense (at times) back pain since starting on our fixer upper over the last 15 months. We knew about the microwavable bead wraps, but you brought a lot of new ideas forth for us! Really interested in trying the TENS Unit Therapy and Shiatsu Massager on him to see if it relieves any of the pain. Thank you so much for these ideas!

    1. Dear Stephanie, thank you so much for your amazing comment! But please forgive me for my delay in reply. I’ve been trying to catch up after falling behind due to schedule changes from Covid-19!

I am deeply sorry to hear about your hubby’s back pain! It really can and does affect every part of our lives. When pain takes over – sometimes all we can do is rest, despite having a million things on the to-do list! By the way, how’s the home renovation coming along? It’s a lot of fun but a TON of work!

I highly highly recommend trying out the TENS unit. They work miracles for some tough to treat conditions of pain. My shiatsu massager needs to finally be replaced now because I use it so often. Just remember, if the kneading action feels too rough – place a thin barrier between you and the massager’s ‘knobs.’ It helps tremendously!

Have either of you tried any of these devices yet? I’d love to hear if they’ve helped. Thanks again for your comment. I sincerely appreciate you! ♥

  9. Great article, Holly. I’ve dealt with spinal issues since I was 12. The heat wraps, the TENS, physical therapy, and medication are such blessings. I wish I could go without medicine, but if it weren’t for the Lord leading me to EACH of these things I would not be walking. Thanks for the tips and encouragement. Praying you are staying safe and well during this COVID-19 pandemic.
oh and I hope I am not overwhelming you, but I have nominated you for the Vincent Ehindero Blogger Award. Please do not feel obligated to participate. Just sharing a little of God’s love you way. Stay safe. God loves you!

    1. Precious Gail, it’s always a blessing to hear from you my friend! And thank you from the bottom of my heart for your nomination. You are one of the most sincere people on the planet and you are a blessing to me! Thank you! 💕

It hurts my heart to hear that you have suffered with chronic pain since 12 years of age. I am grateful that the Lord has provided you with caring medical personnel and interventions that have helped you experience some relief! Pain is a challenging condition to endure. If not for the Lord – there are days we wouldn’t have made it through, aren’t there?

You could never overwhelm me, Gail. I am grateful for you and your comments. Thank you! 🤗

      1. Holly, I am so grateful for your heart and your patience. I answered this the other day and my phone did not send it through when I thought it did. 🙁 I am still trying to figure out how it disappears between the cell and the laptop.
I was trying to answer you Saturday night and my brain would not have it. I was so tired I kept falling asleep while typing, then forgetting where I was, or what I was even thinking on. By the times I got it back I was asleep again.
Thank you so much for your kind words. Your compassion leaves me speechless. There is something about the kindness of others that always leaves me awestruck. Opening wide my eyes, heart, and mind to God’s whispers.
I too am grateful for His provisions along the way. Especially that of my dad, and then all of the medical help He has sent me through the years. One attentive, understanding and compassionate doctor makes up for 20 that don’t see what you are complaining about,
I pray you are having good health days. I remember I was replying to your having so much going on and was praying for you!. Even typos couldn’t take those words away from God’s ears! <3 Still praying for you! <3

  10. Thank you for sharing these awesome tips. I fell off an 8 feet fence working on a construction site in 2009, and my life has never been the same. This fall called for approximately fourteen surgeries including back and hands and sustained a concussion and other procedures. I had six pain injection in March 2020 and they are wearing off. I am fifty two and never expected to suffer from chronic pain, diagnosed with Chronic Kidney Disease State II, MGUS precancerous condition, migraine, and peripheral neuropathy and few more minor conditions.

    1. Dearest Tangie, first and foremost, I am deeply sorry for what you have been through! Oh my goodness, bless your heart. It sounds to me that you are blessed to still be with us after an accident of that severity! 🤗 I’d love to be able to take your pain away. Please know that my thoughts and prayers are with you for comfort and God’s healing touch on your life. How are you feeling now?

If there’s any way I can help, any advice I can give, please let me know! My hope is that any (or all) of these products I mentioned in this post will help you like they have helped me. My heart breaks hearing how much pain you’re suffering from. Pain does change our lives in ways we never imagined, no matter the age or reason it begins.

Sending my love to you. Words fail me. 😔
