How a gratitude journal with prompts can change your mind
If we are being honest with ourselves, sometimes we simply need encouragement to think on the bright side of life, right?
I don’t know about you, but I’ll be fully transparent and admit that my ‘stinkin’ thinking’ takes over far more often than I’d like. My attention goes too easily to what I can’t do, don’t have, or think is impossible to accomplish. (sigh)
Can you relate?
As I often like to say here at Wholeness Haven, you’re not alone! It helps to know that how we feel is also being experienced by others.
You are not defective because you are experiencing feelings of discouragement, discontent, self-doubt, or unhappiness.
When we face less than ideal circumstances we can’t change, it helps to shift our focus onto what we can change!
With dedication, we begin to take back our power over darkness, and the joy of a positive, grateful heart begins to resurface.
It is impossible to feel grateful and depressed in the same moment
Naomi Williams
Few truer words have ever been spoken than these by Deepak Chopra, “What you give your attention to, grows.”
When we are stressed out, overwhelmed, and confused, we don’t think clearly. A simple shift in our focus toward gratitude can literally change the perspective we see through.
An attitude of gratitude places us in the right frame of mind to see challenges as opportunities for growth instead of sending us into a spiral of depression, anxiety, worry, and confusion.
Problems that seem overwhelming suddenly appear much smaller when our perspective shifts from what is wrong to what is right.
This is the biggest reason I believe a gratitude journal with prompts can help us get un-stuck in those moments of life where we’re just not seeing through a very positive or helpful lens.
The prompts help us find reasons to be grateful, when quite frankly, we have a hard time thinking of anything good!
We’ve all been there!
We can stop giving our full focus to what brings us down; instead, we can allow ourselves to acknowledge the bad, but begin to really celebrate and elevate the great!
No one is expected to be sunshine and roses all of the time. We don’t need to deny difficult emotions or situations. That is dangerous! Perspective is the key.
We are demolishing arguments and ideas, every high-and-mighty philosophy that pits itself against the knowledge of the one true God. We are taking prisoners of every thought, every emotion, and subduing them into obedience to the Anointed One.
2 Corinthians 10:5 (The Voice)
Like you, I need that extra little push some days to take my thoughts captive and focus on the goodness of God over the difficulty of unruly emotions or negative thought patterns.
It may feel a little challenging at first but it takes very little time investment to see the positive effects begin to bloom in your life.
Find what works for you! We are all different and that’s a good thing. You may enjoy journaling multiple times a day. Others do best with once per week, or maybe only when inspired. There is no right or wrong way to feel grateful and document it!
Heck, I’m grateful for that!

Summing it all up, friends, I’d say you’ll do best by filling your minds and meditating on things true, noble, reputable, authentic, compelling, gracious—the best, not the worst; the beautiful, not the ugly; things to praise, not things to curse. Put into practice what you learned from me, what you heard and saw and realized. Do that, and God, who makes everything work together, will work you into his most excellent harmonies.
Phillipians 4:8-9 (MSG)
Are there any health benefits to gratitude journaling?
I have a confession to make. While I knew all along that having a healthy mindset was critical to actually enjoying an abundant life, I didn’t realize the positive physical and mental effects were so unbelievable.
Acknowledging the good that you already have in your life is the foundation for all abundance
Eckhart Tolle
As I was doing research for this blog post, I came across some stunning studies on gratitude journaling and why it can literally change your life!
Here are just a few proven benefits of gratitude:
- Less aches and pains (likely due to lower rates of depression)
- More likely to exercise regularly and look after physical health
- Reduction in toxic emotions such as envy, regret, frustration, or bitterness
- Increases empathy and likelihood of showing kindness to others
- Improved sleep (which means improved mood!)
- Less likely to compare yourself to others or suffer from low self-esteem
- Greatly reduces stress and aids in the healing of trauma or PTSD
- Decreases materialism and increases contentment
- Encourages healthy eating habits
- ….and lowers your risk of heart disease!
Isn’t that list amazing?!? What’s even more amazing is that I could have easily continued the list! I had no idea that choosing gratitude could help bring so many meaningful benefits into our lives. What about you?

All My Love,

Gratitude births life. Thanks for sharing this, ma’am. 🤗
Ooh I love that sis. “Gratitude births life.” How true your wise words are! ♥️ Sending my love to you.
That is an excellent list of journals to pick up from for personal use and encourage writing about gratitude. Thank you for putting this list together and for a reminder to be grateful. I do agree that if you shift the focus towards gratitude, it does wonder. I hope you are having a good day.
Hi Svet! You’re right about how even the slightest focus shift toward gratitude does wonders. I love how you put that. 😊 Sending my love to you & yours. I hope each of you are well. As always, I’m thankful for you sharing your thoughts with me!
Wonderful ideas here Holly. A journal is a great way to get our feelings out and help us to achieve a richer full life.
Hi Michele! I agree, journaling really does wonders for our mental health and our ability to process things that are weighing heavily on our hearts. Thank you for your kind words and for taking the time to comment. I appreciate you! ♥
Oooo I love this! I’ve written a few times before about focusing on what we can do and what we can change, but I love how you’ve taken this a step further with beginning to ‘really celebrate and elevate the great!’ I think we can find it so difficult to find the good stuff sometimes and those are the times we need to see it the most, even if it takes us a while. See it, appreciate it, elevate it. I think that could be a new tagline 😉
I love that Eckhart Tolle quote on acknowledging the good we already have, too. There are lots of good Tolle quotes, and that’s perfect choice for this post. Gratitude really can be incredibly powerful. I love the journal suggestions too, some of these look really beautiful! I think ones with inspirational quotes tempt me more because I’m such a sucker for quotes, and these sorts of journals with suggestions and reflections are a great way to encourage us and motivate us to really use them and get the most out of them.
Another incredible post, Holly! 🙏 I’m GRATEFUL for you as a friend & as a gem in the blogging world. I’ll put that in my journal!
Caz xx
Caz, you have no idea how big of a smile you just put on my face with this comment. Thank you with my whole heart! More than you know, I am truly grateful for you as well.
“See it, appreciate it, elevate it.” Dang! That is a great tagline! 😀 I’ve always loved how you approach the topic of focusing on what we can do or change. Your posts always inspire & leave room for some heavy-duty thinking. It’s a wonderful thing when we have friends in our lives that help us shift our unhelpful mindsets and patterns, isn’t it? We often underestimate our worth and our value. People like you are powerhouses for undoing some of those toxic thoughts. 🤗
I hear you on the journals with inspirational quotes. Like you, I tend to really enjoy those too. Honestly, it’s amazing how much one simple quote can change our lives, isn’t it? That one little seed of thought can truly blossom into a whole new way of thinking in life.
Thank you again for your amazing comments, Caz. You genuinely made my whole day! ♥
Wonderful post! Gratitude can be absolutely life changing. However, like you pointed out, it’s sometimes hard to find. I think gratitude journals with prompts are the perfect solution. I love that you shared so many different journals. There’s one to suit everyones needs. Thanks so much for this!
Hi Tiffany! Thanks for visiting Wholeness Haven and sharing your thoughts! 🙂 I agree with you about gratitude; there are simply times in life when we need that extra help to ‘look on the bright side’ and get a better perspective of our situation. We are usually far more blessed than we realize!
Much love & many blessings headed your way. ♥
An “attitude of gratitude” is one of my favorite phrases. I often forget to be grateful and I think a journal with prompts would be so helpful for me. The health benefits are something I didn’t know about but they make total sense! Thank you for this. 🙂
Hi Heidi! It’s great to hear from you. You’re not alone in forgetting to be grateful. So many of us really do want to set our minds on the right things but get caught up in the less than beautiful or worthy things of this ol’ world! Those prompts really do make us think and dig deeper into our hearts and minds.
Like you, I was surprised by how powerful the health benefits are! Yet, as you say, it makes perfect sense. 🙂 Sending love and gratitude your way for sharing your thoughts! ♥
Holly, This is a very interesting and spot on post. Thank you for sharing 🙂
Love you, Janet! I’m grateful for your love & support! Thank you for your kind words, my friend! 🤗
Wonderful post on the attitude of gratitude, Holly. Keep spreading the light. 🙂
Mark, you have made my day today. Thank you for all of your shares and kind words. You have no idea how much they’ve meant. I echo those same words to you — keep spreading the light. You’re amazing! 😊
You do it so well, Holly. I’m just making an observation.
Choosing to be grateful for what I have in my life has improved my life in every way. God has provided so many good things, including an ability to be relentlessy positive in a healthy way. This is something I have had to work on, like any skill, to make sure I’m expressing gratitude for writing, for my family and friends, for keenness to exercise, and for the ability to acknowledge when I am wrong and to do better next time. And every day I feel the love of God I can pass that on to others around me.
I have not made use of a specific gratitude journal myself, but your description of them and how they help has made me think I would benefit from getting one.
Thank you, Holly. ❤
Once again Hamish your comments are the absolute best!
I love what you said here: “And every day I feel the love of God I can pass that on to others around me.” — That’s the beautiful part isn’t it? As He fills our cup to overflow with His love, we can pour out that love and generosity on those who need it most. We can literally change lives with the love of God. Amazing!
Like you, I too am working on being more grateful for even the simpler things in life. We were created for JOY and a lot of joy comes from feeling grateful, even when we don’t understand the mess around us.
Sending endless love and gratitude your way for being your amazing self! Thank YOU, Hamish! ♥
